Lake Mburo National Park

Lake Mburo National Park is Uganda’s most accessible savannah park, located just a 3-hour drive from Kampala along the Kampala-Mbarara route. Its proximity makes it an ideal destination for a quick getaway or even a day trip safari experience. Despite being the smallest of Uganda’s savannah parks, Lake Mburo is rich in wildlife, birdlife, and scenic beauty, offering a variety of unique safari experiences.

On-Foot Safari & Horseback Safari

One of the park’s most exciting features is the opportunity for on-foot safaris, where visitors can explore the savannah landscape while walking amongst the wildlife. This rare experience allows you to feel closer to nature and observe animals such as zebras, impalas, and warthogs without the confines of a vehicle.

In addition to walking safaris, Lake Mburo is the only national park in Uganda where you can enjoy a horseback safari. Riding through the savannah on horseback offers a quiet, non-intrusive way to encounter wildlife like giraffes, elands, and zebras up close.

Game Drives and Wildlife

Lake Mburo National Park boasts a variety of wildlife, making it a great place for game drives. Although it doesn’t have lions or elephants, it offers abundant sightings of:

  • Zebras
  • Giraffes
  • Buffaloes
  • Elands (Lake Mburo is the only park besides Kidepo Valley National Park where you can spot this majestic antelope)
  • Topis
  • Warthogs

For wildlife lovers, the park provides a quieter, more intimate safari experience compared to Uganda’s larger national parks.

Boat Cruise on Lake Mburo

A boat cruise on Lake Mburo is another must-do activity in the park. As you glide along the calm waters, you can observe a range of aquatic animals and birds, including:

  • Hippos lounging in the water
  • Nile crocodiles sunning along the banks
  • A variety of bird species, including African fish eagles, herons, and kingfishers

Birdwatchers will particularly enjoy the rich birdlife along the shores, as Lake Mburo is home to over 350 bird species.

Cycling Safaris and Community Experiences

Lake Mburo National Park is also a haven for adventure lovers, with unique cycling safaris available both inside and outside the park. Riding through the park on a bicycle offers an exhilarating way to explore the savannah and interact with wildlife.

Beyond the park, the surrounding communities provide a culturally rich experience. Visitors can learn about the traditional lifestyles of the Banyankole people, visit local farms, and experience the vibrant culture of western Uganda.

Wildlife and Birds

Despite its small size, Lake Mburo National Park is home to an impressive diversity of species. Besides the mammals mentioned earlier, the park is a birdwatcher’s paradise. Some notable bird species include:

  • Crested cranes (Uganda’s national bird)
  • Red-faced barbets
  • Papyrus gonoleks
  • White-winged warblers
