Murchison Falls National Park

Murchison Falls National Park is Uganda’s largest and most famous savannah park, offering an exceptional wildlife experience. Located in the northwestern part of Uganda, this iconic park is renowned for its diverse ecosystems, including savannah grasslands, wetlands, riverine forests, and woodlands. One of the park’s most dramatic features is the Murchison Falls, where the Nile River squeezes through a narrow gorge and plunges 43 meters into a thunderous cascade.

The Big Five Experience

Murchison Falls National Park provides visitors with the unique opportunity to encounter Africa’s Big Five:

  • Lions
  • Leopards
  • Elephants
  • Buffaloes
  • Rhinos (at Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary, just outside the park)

While the rhino population was historically wiped out in Murchison Falls, visitors can add a stop at Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary for an unforgettable on-foot rhino trekking experience, completing the Big Five safari. The sanctuary offers the rare opportunity to observe rhinos in their natural habitat as part of ongoing conservation efforts.

Game Drives

The northern sector of the park is the primary area for game drives, providing exceptional wildlife viewing. During the game drive, visitors can spot:

  • Lions, often seen lounging in the savannah or hunting in the early mornings or evenings.
  • Leopards, although elusive, can be spotted in trees or prowling in the bush.
  • Large herds of elephants and buffaloes roaming the plains.
  • Giraffes, Uganda kobs, warthogs, baboons, and various antelope species, such as oribis and waterbucks.

The game drives offer the perfect opportunity to observe the park’s rich wildlife up close in their natural habitat.

Boat Cruise on the Nile

Murchison Falls National Park offers two iconic boat cruise experiences along the Nile River:

  1. Boat Cruise to the Delta: This cruise takes you towards the delta where the Nile empties into Lake Albert. The delta is a haven for birdlife, and birdwatchers are particularly drawn here for the chance to see the rare shoebill stork. Additionally, visitors can spot hippos, crocodiles, and other wildlife along the riverbanks.
  2. Boat Cruise to the Bottom of the Falls: This cruise offers a spectacular journey along the Nile towards the base of the powerful Murchison Falls. Along the way, you’ll witness abundant wildlife such as hippos, elephants, and crocodiles, and get a close-up view of the falls, where the Nile gushes through a narrow 7-meter gap before dropping dramatically into the pool below.

Bird Watching

Murchison Falls National Park is a paradise for bird lovers, with over 450 species recorded. The delta and the banks of the Nile provide excellent bird-watching opportunities, where visitors can spot:

  • The rare shoebill stork
  • African fish eagles
  • Pied kingfishers
  • Goliath herons
  • Malachite kingfishers
  • African jacanas

Accommodation

Most accommodations in Murchison Falls National Park are located in the northern sector, providing convenient access to game drive areas and the boat cruise points. Visitors can choose from a range of accommodations, from budget campsites to luxury lodges, all offering stunning views of the surrounding savannah and the Nile River.
